With Carriage Clock Yinka Shonibare explores the interrelationship between Africa and Europe and the residue of empire which has formed his own British Nigerian identity.

His works often reimagine icons and objects of colonial power. The original carriage clock was a small spring driven clock, designed for traveling, in early 19 th century France. Yinka Shonibare’s interpretation of the carriage clock explores colonial power through word play and a playful reimagining of a carriage clock, he transforms the carriage into the actual clock. Here the signifier of power embodied in the Queen’s carriage becomes a playful object of time. A wunderkammer in which time itself is reflected in a mirror located in the interior of this miniature carriage inspired by the Queen’s Irish State Coach. In this magical Carriage Clock the seats in the carriage are covered in batik, a fabric the artist continues to use to explore questions of identity.
