Congratulations to Elias Sime on the unveiling of Roots, his monumental site-specific commission for Johns Hopkins University's Hopkins Bloomberg Center. Sime's work joins installations by the late Sam Gilliam, Sandra Cinto, and Shahzia Sikander, each chosen to reflect the Hopkins Bloomberg Center's mission to foster discovery and the global exchange of ideas.
Roots is Sime's most ambitious work to date. Wrapping the entire exterior of the Center's theater, it spans more than 2,000 square feet and is composed of electronic components and braided electrical wires. Circuits and keyboards are laid out into distinct fields; wires are coiled and braided into textile-like patterns.
