James Cohan congratulates Naudline Pierre on the release of Art21's new film, "Naudline Pierre: A Place Other Than Here," premiering Wednesday, May 15th at 12:00 PM ET at Art21.org and on Art21’s YouTube channel. The short film explores the large-scale paintings and mystical influences of the New York City-based artist.

Whether painting in her Brooklyn studio or roaming amidst the medieval artworks at The Met Cloisters, Naudline Pierre reframes traditional representations of religion and spirituality, finding freedom in a world of her own making—where the airborne and earthbound coexist and cooperate. “Fantasy for me is survival,” says Naudline Pierre in the film. “It’s not just pleasure, it’s essential. It has been for my whole life.”

"Making this film was akin to being granted access to Naudline's realm," says Haimy Assefa, the film’s director. "Her embrace of fantasy not only influenced our cinematography but also sparked experimental elements within the film. We seized cinematic opportunities to warp reality at times, inviting viewers on a journey into the fantastical."
